Passion is What Drives Entrepreneurs

“Don’t worry about being successful but work toward being significant and the success will naturally follow.”

- Oprah Winfrey

Passion is the fuel that drives people towards success in their endeavors. It serves as an important element for anyone who wishes to achieve success in their life. Passion is what helps build successful entrepreneurs as it requires great work. Entrepreneurship is known to require a unique vision, an immense amount of hard work, and a fair share of stress, with unpredictable returns. Entrepreneurs like Brian Bonar are people who are willing to take risks to create something new.

Research has shown how passion develops persistence nd help improve venture performance. The more passionate entrepreneurs are, like Brian Bonar, the more they are likely to be successful. In his book the United States of Success, Brian Bonar says how his book is, “for those struggling to achieve their definition of success. It is for the bruised, the broken, the hopeful, the hard workers, and most importantly, those that have a burning passion for doing something meaningful in their lives.” This then illustrates how the successful entrepreneur gives weightage and importance to the quality of passion.

Later in his book the United States of Success, Brian Bonar explains how it was passion that drove him to his success. “I was born into a family where the man’s fate was tied to the shipyard. My father had done it, and so had his fathers before him. And somehow, they had assumed would do the same. Don’t get me wrong, that is how I started. I didn’t take a step back thinking, ‘This is too embarrassing for me’ or ‘I need to make more money,’ all I knew back then was that I had a burning passion inside me and I did whatever I could to serve it at that time.” Through his example, Brian Bonar explains and demonstrates how it was passion helped him follow his dreams. This is what is unique about passion. It burns inside people and makes them find ways to make impossible, possible.

On the whole, there are three types of passions found in entrepreneurs. These include the following:

  1. .       The passion for inventing focuses on creating new services and products, and recognizes new        opportunities.
  2. .      The passion for founding focuses on nurturing and setting up the initial venture.
  3. .       The passion for developing focuses on building the venture.

According to Brian Bonar, “if you know you have the burning passion of an entrepreneur inside of you, even those that are ‘by the book’ need to push themselves beyond mental, emotional, and physical borders they set for themselves.” Passion in entrepreneurship is important because it gives people a whole different attitude to run their business. Brian Bonar is one example of a passionate entrepreneur.
